The Backsplash Is Where the Kitchen Gets Its Character

A kitchen backsplash covers the wall between the counter and the upper cabinets, and in kitchens with open shelving it can extend much higher. It is one of the smaller tile jobs in a home by square footage, but it is often the most visible. The pattern, the tile size, the grout joint width, and the color all read from across the room every time you walk into the kitchen.

We install backsplash tile in Atlanta kitchens from straightforward subway tile runs to full-height stone slabs behind a range. The installation challenges are different from a floor. The tile is vertical, the adhesive needs to hold without slipping before it cures, and the cuts around outlets, switches, and cabinet edges need to be clean and tight.

Patterns We Install

Subway Tile

Classic 3x6 or 4x8 rectangular tile. The pattern choice matters as much as the tile. Straight stack, running bond, and vertical stack all read differently on the wall.

Herringbone

Angled interlocking pattern that adds visual movement. Requires more cuts and a careful layout to keep the angle consistent across the full run.

Mosaic and Glass

Small-format tiles on mesh backing. Glass mosaic requires white thinset so the color does not bleed through. The grout joint is typically very tight.

Large-Format Slabs

Porcelain or stone slabs that minimize grout lines. Require precise back-buttering and often specialized clips to hold the weight during cure.

Hexagon

Six-sided tile in small or large format. The mesh-backed small hex is common; large-format hex requires careful layout to keep the geometry centered.

What Makes a Backsplash Install Clean

Outlet and switch covers are removed before tile goes up. The tile cuts around the electrical boxes, and the covers go back on top. Grout lines align with the counter surface rather than starting from a random point. Where the backsplash meets the counter, we use caulk rather than grout so the joint can flex. Upper edges get a clean tile trim piece rather than a raw cut edge.
