Gray Marble Tub Surround in Capitol View

This tub surround in a Capitol View ranch home was retiled using large gray marble-look porcelain on the three wall faces, with a black and silver glass mosaic accent strip running horizontally across the back wall and continuing into a recessed niche. The original tub was kept in place, which required careful measurement to align the tile courses with the tub deck and the existing ceiling height.

The accent strip with niche is a detail that needs to be planned in advance. The niche must be framed between studs and the horizontal accent strip must land at a height that is both aesthetically centered on the wall and structurally possible given the stud spacing. We plan this layout on paper before framing the niche opening.
