Large-Format Living Room Floor Tile in Capitol View

This living room floor in a Capitol View ranch home was installed with large-format dark charcoal porcelain tile over a concrete slab. The slab had two hairline cracks from settling, which we addressed by installing a crack isolation membrane before setting tile. The membrane decouples the tile from minor slab movement and prevents cracks from telegraphing through the finished floor.

Large-format tile on a dark body requires back-buttering each tile in addition to combing the adhesive on the slab. Any void behind the tile will flex and eventually crack under foot traffic. We used a leveling clip system throughout to keep lippage to zero across the large field.
